  Former Pupils

The Year of Homecoming

It would be interesting to know about former pupils who have lived abroad and who are "homecoming" this year.

The latest contact was:

Robert Mustard: I was a pupil at RDM from 62-66 and was hoping that someone may have a photo of me and my class mates from this period.   robert.mustard@hotmail.co.uk

Former pupils are welcome to make contact with us and insert material here. Keep in touch with former friends. Please email your details and include your email address if you wish folk to be in touch.

First a reminder of the Dux board (at the suggestion of a former pupil).

School Dux Board

This could be your space if you were a former pupil - please get in touch.
(It's helpful if you give dates when you were at RDM when you write so that fellow pupils can key in to who you are.)

You may also know about the www.friendsreunited.co.uk site on which are many entries from RDM and other schools if you want to track down former class mates. Don't forget to tell them about our RDM site when you are in touch.

Here are others who have made contact:

My name is Heather Pilcher, and my sister Lorna Pilcher. We both attended RDM in 1970-ish. We lived at 108 Stormont Rd in Scone. Navy Brats.. Lorna went on to attend Perth Academy. My best friends in class were Fiona( Fifi) , Sylvia (Snibbles) and Morag.. (Sorry, I forgot your nickname). Anyone remember us? Kaibluecreations@Gmail.com

My name is Gayl Symons, I live in South Africa and have been here for 30 odd years, I would love to hear from anyone who may have been in my class at that time and remembers this old timer! I was browsing the Internet the other day and just wondered whether or not that RDMS had a page. Yes, there it was! Thank you, its great to see the odd familiar name and remember my happy days there, (even if I did get beaten up every now and again because I was English and spoke funny ! ( It has not damaged me, I promise!).

My father was transferred from England to Scotland in the army and I started in your school in 1960 and left I think about '63. We used to live in the "cabbage patch" in Woolcombe Square (army housing) and from Scone moved to Pitlochry. I was wondering if you have any old photos from those classes back then? I am also looking for a girl called Robin Swanney who was at the school (local Scone girl). My sister Tish had the wee shop/cafe in the park close to the school. This may jog someone's memory. johnb@iafrica.com

Caroline Moffat (nee Nicholls) emailed, with a photo, saying; “Here is a photo and would be very pleased if you could put it on your website.  I was amazed that the school have admission books dating back to 1959, that's wonderful.  Thank you so much for giving me the dates I attended RDMS.  My father was in the Army and we had just come back from Germany where we lived for 3 years.  When we left RDMS in 1960 we returned to Edinburgh where my parents were from. I lived at 116 Stormont Road and remember there were lots of children to play with.  I have so many happy memories of Scone, but unfortunately, only remember the names of 2 children in the school photo. I was a pupil in 1958-1959.  I'm in the 2nd front row on the end at the right.  I only know the names of 2 people in the photo.  Christopher Reid front row on the end at the left.  Elizabeth Baker 2nd front row 4th from the left. My brother, Colin Nicholls, also went to RDMS. I now live in Brisbane, Australia. Contact her at: carolinemoffat@optusnet.com.au

My name is Ronald Blyth and I attended RDMS from 1952 to 1958 when I moved
on to Perth High School. It is therefore now 50 years! since I left and I
have come over all nostalgic for the old days. My first class was housed in
the Institute down the road, how many people remember that? My time in the
school was esentially a happy experience and I remember my classmates and
the teachers reasonably well. After leaving the High School I joined the
Royal Air Force and eventually settled in Cheshire where I now live. As a
result I have lost all touch with former classmates, so if anyone remembers
this period and wants a "chat" they can contact me at ron.blyth@tiscali.co.uk

Jack Mackay
wants to arrange a reunion of the "Class of '63". Are you one of that group? He writes: Not being the most computer literate pupil I despeerately need to know how to contact my classmates who would have been in the 6th form about 1963. We are all approaching the grand total of 60 years which by present day standards is still quite young. I went under several nicknames ,all to my regret, including Narssis, Kaiser, Mackay but would appreciate some contact. Thankyou Jack Mackay. class of 1963.

Madalane Turpin
emailed from Canada: I am an ex pupil of RDMS. We emigrated to Canada in 1966. I will be in Scotland and visiting Scone with my family some time the week of May 9th. I notice from your website that there are celebrations on May 9th for the 200th anniversary of Scone. As visitors we do not want to be intrusive, but I would certainly like to take my family for a walk through the school and some classrooms. I am writing this to see what would be a good time for us to be able to do this without interrupting. My name was Madalane Gabrek and my family all went to RDMS; Maria, Frank, Jean, and Kenneth.

Then after a visit to Scone I would like to thank you for your hospitality on May 10 when my family and I were given a tour of the school. It has been 39 years since I was last inside RDMS. I was pleased to see that much of the old structure has not changed. My Father, who was a Polish soldier billeted in Scotland, used to tell his grandchildren about the Polish Eagle on the school and how the Poles donated it to the school during the second world war. He was very proud of it since Scotland was now his home. It was touching for them to see it. Thank you again and please convey my thanks to the staff member who gave us the tour.

Neil Simpson
(now in Connecticut) writes: What an enjoyable update on my first school! I remember RDM fondly, and am still in contact with several classmates. I was a member of the class of '78, and my career at RDM was shaped by:-

P1: Miss Ross
P2: Miss Whittet (who became Mrs. Cougan)
P3: Miss Dudman
P4: Miss Honey
P5: Mr. Guyan
P6: Miss Stark
P7: Mr. Gray

Throughout my time, the headmaster was Mr. Munro. nheil3@yahoo.co.uk

Karl Cassidy
from Warminster says: I used to be at this school 82-89 and im glad to see the vast improvement in the autistic unit.I have been in the Black Watch now for 9 years and don`t get home to scone much,id love for my 2 daughters to go to school there, but because of my job they have to go elsewhere. I had Mr Stewart as a teacher in P7 and Mrs Michie P3.

Keep up the good work at the school chaps and good luck in the future. cass1bwrhr@yahoo.co.uk

Evelyn Nelson (Manson)
was not a former pupil but writes from Carlisle, Cumbria saying: Never attended but knew / know lots who did! Carole & Maureen McKeith, Aileen Low, Colin Cameron, Andy Moncreiffe, Margaret Styles etc. I attended Perth Academy 1965-1969. Was also friends then with Alison Campbell. evelyn.nelson@btinternet.com

John White
from Dublin, Ireland wrote at length, but here is most of his email: Well, I'm so thrilled and moved to just even see a photo of my old school in Scone. I enjoyed really happy times there with some great friends between [I think] 1971 and 1977. I was in Miss Goodall's class, but can't remember any other names, with Alan Bryce, Niall Barr [Known as the Encyclopaedia], Ewan Much, Simon Nicholl, Leslie [Duncan/Woods?], Sean Scoby [Who received a black eye from me - I renounced violence from that day forth], Ian Howe [?], John Gibson, and many more boys. Another girl [who at the age of 5 I naturally assumed was also my girlfriend was Mandy Beveridge and perhaps Nicola? We had fantastic fun there. The school was so unusual in that the desks were really large tables arranged facing into one another - I think it was being progressive - and there were fun and stimulating classes such as Craft, Art, Storytime, music and Slide shows. We also had a library class - wonderful!

Scone was a really interesting place for youngsters with the beautiful park; pond full of frogs in summer, iced-over in winter; with the most incredible Disneyesque floral displays on the Rhododendrons. We'd walk back home through the trees in the park to get home in Ashgrove, opposite the woods. They were terrific too - you could walk miles and end up in all sorts of terrain. Of course the woods up the hill way behind the school were terrific too with the air-raid shelter and aerodrome. Oh happy days, what a great place to live. I wonder how we ended up in Kildare in Ireland in 1977. Once there we were in a tiny Irish village, with a primitive school. One room per class - you were only ever in one room - it smelled awful and there was no art on the curriculum. It was quite a culture shock! I really must visit Scone again, perhaps next year for the anniversary. Anyone remember being in the cub scouts, during the silver jubilee? Oh I could go on and on but I'd better stop. I love the website.

I think my sister Maria was in Mr. Gray's class. Her friends included Maureen Stubbs and was it Eileen Shields? RDMS was a fantastic place, I miss it. johnwhiteartist@hotmail.com

David Ferguson
"I was at RDMS from 1968 to 1975 and have many fond memories of the school and living in Scone." thefergs@tiscali.co.uk

Gary Taylor Cree
was in touch to say: "Excellent website ! I thoroughly enjoyed looking through it : ) I was at RDMS from 1971-1978. Mr Walker was Head when I started then Mr Munro took over in 73 I think. My Teachers were : P1 Miss Goodall, P2 Miss Macphee, P3 Mrs Flannagan, P4 Miss Stewart, P5 Mrs Campbell, P6 Mr Thomson, P7 Mr Gray. Happiest memory was being Captain of Stormont when winning the overall sports day. Unhappiest moment was the one time I got the belt from the music teacher Mrs Duncan for something I didn't do ! Such is life : ) Overall I loved my time at RDMS and am hoping my son will also go there when he reaches age."   Wolfhillbillys@aol.com

Suzanne Marshall
"I was a former pupil in 1976. I enjoyed my stay at R.D.M. And I am so pleased that my children also attend the school."

Joseph West
(Class of 1977): Thank you for a very informative and helpful web page about "Rusty Dusty Mouldy Sausage" as we used to call it in our day. This is just a short note to point out too you that the picture of the dux board is not appearing on the web site. I was looking forward to showing this picture to my sister as her name appears on it "Rosealene West","1968" I would appreciate if this picture were to be restored as it would make at least four former pupils very happy. Ian Abernethy:

Rose Nunneley
says: "It was a lovely discovery to find RDM on the web and see all the photos and familiar faces among the staff. I was a pupil from 1989 to 1994 (when I moved to Sussex) and am continually thankful for the excellent grounding the school gave me. I am now reading BSc Psychology at the University of Bath. Particular thanks to Miss Michie, Mrs Lobban, Mrs Laughton, Mrs Ewing and Mrs Cathcart." ps2rn@bath.ac.uk

Then we moved down south to Sussex in 1993. I am currently in my final year at Exeter University, where I'm studying Classical Studies and French. My education at RDM gave me a fantastic grounding, particularly in the 3 Rs. Hello to Miss Michie, Mrs Cathcart and special thanks to Mr Stewart for really encouraging my intellectual development! Your approach in P7 prepared me well for secondary education." K.Nunneley@exeter.ac.uk

Stuart Cummings
emailed from which the following is extracted: "I attended RDMS from 1958 to 1963 before going on to Perth Academy, Queens Park Secondary School, and finally Aberdeen Grammar School. I attended Aberdeen University and Strathclyde University. I finally joined the pharmaceutical industry. I married Catriona in 1989 and we have two boys.

My school memories include breaking the school fountain (for which I was duly punished), having the science teacher (Miss Lindsay?), take splinters out of my fingers, schools sports days and being reserve for the primary 7 Scottish country dancing set.

For those who left primary 7 in 1963, I have this (crazy?) notion of holding a reunion in June next year (2003) which would mark the 40th year since leaving RDMS. I was recently in touch with Sandy Cameron who expressed support and together we were able to come up with the following list of names from memory Roy Ferrier, Albert Angus, Linda Baines, Ann Butchart, Jane Alexander, Malcolm Kneba, Sandy Cameron, Stuart Cummings, Jacqueline Foreman, Graham Shirra, Marie Robertson, William Sweetman, Evelyn Dunlop, Brian Wilson, Neil Davidson, Isabelle Scrimgeour, Doris....... If, anyone reading this note knows the whereabouts of any of those listed please let me know. stuart_cummings@merck.com

Eric Blair wrote among some requests for past memories:
"I attended RDM School between 1957-62. There was a football team photo taken in 1961 at Muirton Park when we reached the final, if I remember correctly, of the Norrie Millar Cup. I lost the photo(s) a long time ago. I had such a happy and wonderful time at Scone." erblair21@hotmail.com

Grant Fraser continues our international interest by writing from Osaka in Japan: "I was a pupil at RDM from 82-89 and it's great to see the old school on the internet. It's also particularly impressive to see the pupils getting involved with the construction of the website. The photos they took around the village have made me feel a little homesick. I'd like to say a big hello and a big thank you to the teachers that taught me while I was at RDM. I have many fond memories of those days and I'm sure some of you must still be there 13 years on! Iro iro o sewa ni narimashite, makoto ni arigatou gozaimasu!"

Tricia Bennet (nee McMillan) wrote: "Was signposted to your site by friends reunited. I was at RDM from 64-71 when I went on to the Academy. I am now a Community Development Officer in Bracknell, Berkshire, am married and have 2 teenagers, Alastair 18 and Fiona 17. My dad's uncle was the janny when I was there (Willie McMillan) and Mr Walker was the head. There wasn't enough room in the school for all the classes so we had a room at the Institute when we were in P7. Mr Grey was our teacher, does anyone else remember the long playtimes we got! My nephews, Allan and Eoghan MacMillan are currently pupils at the school and my mum still lives in Druid's Road." bennett.family@ic24.net

Lisa O'Sullivan (nee Anderson) "I left RDMS in 1964 when we moved to Watford. It's fascinating seeing so many names I remember. I'm now in touch with Joan Farquarson again and would love to hear from anyone else who remembers me." lisa.o'sullivan@gp-E82013.nhs.uk

Folowing that, I was in the Royal Air Force for 24 years. Those were the days! If anyone remembers me, it would be great to hear from them again, as I have lost touch with everyone over the years. My parents still live in Thistle Place near the school."

"I have returned to this site, after racking my 'dozy!' brain about names from the past. I was captain of RDM Primary 6/7 football team, playing in goal or Right Back, and went on to play (badly) for Railway Athletic amongst a few others. People I went to school with, and/or played football with were, Alistair Clifford, Derek Mitchell, Ian Brown, Ian Wilkie, Ralph Tilston. Just when you think you remember loads it all disappears again. I will return when I get my brain properly into gear! Duncan.millar1@ntlworld.com"

Lee Johnston

We lived in the wooden bungalow near to the Red Church and I have many wonderful memories from my life in Scone. I can't see any names I remember but maybe someone out there will remember me. I never did never well with the old school work. I do remember Mrs Campbell who had me for 2 years! Poor thing. I however have done quite well and after becoming an R.N. and working in England, Wales and Saudi Arabia I settled in California became a Sister in the Operating Room and am now a Manager in a very Large Operating Room here in California. My favourite fun times were sliding down the grass banks on very icy and snowy winter days, as well as marble competitions in the concrete drains round the vast playing fields. I've kept in touch with one or two people from then, but would love to hear from others". linda.burns@talk21.com

Colin Anderson

I can remember SO much about my time at RDM - some great teachers like Miss Cameron, Mrs Penny and Miss Donald, some really bad recorder playing (mostly me), lots of after school activities - netball, chess, choir (with mixed results), but very happy times overall (talk about being overcome by nostalgia!) The picture of the school really brings it all home.

I'm based in Oxfordshire these days, married with one boy (2yrs) but back in Scone a few times a year as my parents are still in Queens Road. Also in contact with Audrey Crockart (now Mattner and a violin teacher at RDM!) and Sarah Dowse - who else is out there? If there's anyone out there that would like to make contact after all these years please email me at (yes I know it's the longest email address you've seen today but that's what happens when you let the husband arrange these things!)"

My memories of RDMS were of playing football in the vast playing fields, helping Mr Fordyce deliver the milk to the classrooms early in the morning, and lining up outside Mr Munro's office for "The Belt". One particular day there were about six of us waiting for a leathering. Didn't do me any harm! Friends at that time were, Stewart Reid, Michael Ogilvy, Garry Jackson, Jonny McArthur, Andrew McCerracher, my neighbour Derek Scrimgour plus many others. My family belonged to the House of Stormount. The school had 3 houses for sports; Stormount, Mansfield and Douglas and the competition was fierce. In 1966 we emigated to Canada. In 1966 I was in class 3A. Some of my classmates were; Elma Davidson, Isabella Scrimgeour, Catherine Hulsmeier, Kareen McDonald, Albert Angus, Irene Anderson, Davina Mowbray, Joan McCullough, Jenny Ross and Ian Wilson.

To my best friend, Irene Lornie, whom I have lost contact with, I hope you have email. The education that my family received at RDMS has always been valued by us. We remember it as a very strict school, but today can all look back a say that RDMS prepared us for the world. I often meet people from Scotland, but only once in my 35 years in Canada have I met someone who came from Scone. Where did you all go? Thank you RDMS for this opportunity to make contact." fturpin@home.com

Like Errol said it was very hard graft :-) Our garden backed on to Spoutwells Road, right opposite the school gardening area. I can't remember the exact dates that I attended RDMS but I was in the same class as Lorna Stewart who was the 1960 Secondary Dux winner. My mum still lives in Scone right opposite The Aerodrome Inn, it was her who told me about the site and gave me the URL. I'm glad I visited as I have good memories of the school." Contact him on

Duncan Fraser
was at RDM 1964 to 66 when Mr Walker was head. He continues, "Ralph Tilston and David Higgins were neighbours as well as friends. Classmates I remember were Henry Conn, Volker Konig, Richard Stonor, Robin Thomson, Cherry Guild, many others. Derek Mitchell and I worked well together as inside- and outside-left in the school football team. I scored our goal in our 4-1 defeat by Dunbarney in the 1966 Robertson Cup Final, which was my moment of glory at RDMS - a miskick which fooled their keeper."

I attended RDM around 1966/67 left for Australia with my family and returned again for another short stay at RDM around 1972/73.Does anyone remember me? I now work in an oil refinery in Melbourne and have two beautiful kids of my own. I have some fond but very distant memories of RDM. The pond across from the school where we could catch tiddlers and highland cattle wandering adjacent to the schoolground. And snow! I haven't seen snow for ages! I sure would appreciate an email or does anyone have any class photos from that time because all mine have been lost. Thanks for the memories."

He wrote again to say: "Could you please put more pictures of the school and surrounding areas on your website please? I for one would like to see some photos of the park with the pond across the road. Some nice pictures of the main street of Scone would be nice too! Is the Wheel Inn still there? My mother used to work there and I remember walking there after school to meet her and feed the birds with old Mrs Corrigan.I was born at 39 Perth Rd. in the front bedroom 40 years ago! I have some magical memories of my short life in Scone." We'll see what we can do for you - although we have not done requests before!

Bruce Knapp
now lives in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and was at RDM in 1956/57. He was an "army brat" when Mr Henderson was the headteacher. Mrs Adam taught him to love writing. He writes to say, "Enoch
Suter taught science, Jim Stephens carpentry. Seeing the picture brought many memories back - of Ducky Innes, Jimmy Tarbert, Ilona Lumsden, Dave Taylor and all the other 'Kids'.

Does 'Farquarsons' still exist? I used to be their 'messenger-boy. I still remember straining to peddle up the hills of Scone. And the good times we had in the park across from RDMS - Hello Evelyn Knebba! I still miss Scone. One day I'll get back to visit - when I can get a break from working in radio in Toronto."

Andrea Stanford (nee Sherriff)
1968-1975 still lives in Scone. She says, "This summer will mark the 25th anniversary of when I left RDM. My three oldest children have been educated at RDM and my youngest now has a place for next terms afternoon nursery. Doesn`t time fly?!!!. The school will always have a place in my heart, but I am glad that I am past all that now."

I guess the project is dead! I love the section about Scone ... all those pictures really remind me of the place and the architecture. (American architecture is very different in the mid-west)."

He found our website and enjoyed being reminded of his school days in Mr Munroe's time. His email address is: stuart@stuart.net and his web site is: http://www.stuart.net so there's no reason why you should stay out of touch.
